SHOPPING MY CLOSET JANUARY
Hi Everyone! Hope you are staying warm! Nashville has been freezing the past couple of days, and all I want to do is stay home in my comfy leggings and Uggs (that’s right, Uggs are my favorite winter boots, and I don’t care how ugly they are!!!). I am a neat freak, it seems like I am constantly cleaning out something, and January is the perfect month to clean out closets and drawers. I read “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” during the holidays and it got me even more inspired to purge and clean. I am sure some of you have read the book. The author, Marie Kondo, promises that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again (hmmmm). I do agree, that a lot of clutter can make you feel stressed, and that we don’t need a big majority of what we have. The problem I have, is that I am afraid to throw out much of what she says to throw out. For example, I feel like I need to save all of my photos, even ones I have two and three copies of (you know, those boxes and boxes of photos before everything went digital). She also says that you should only keep what brings you joy. I get that, but she asks you to hold the item in your hand to feel if it brings you joy. I don’t understand what you are supposed to feel emotionally when you hold a piece of clothing or item in your hand and ask yourself if it brings you joy. I can hold my favorite handbag in my hand, and know I love it, but I am not sure I “feel” joyful about it??? I am going to try and purge papers, makeup, and socks to start with (weird combination, I know!), and see how I feel. Would love to know your thoughts if you have read the book, and has it worked for you?
Which brings me to what I am going to do this month. Since I am cleaning out, I am challenging myself to a “shopping my closet January”. I am not going to buy anything this month, and only shop in my closet. Do you ever feel like you have a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear? I do, but I am going to try and be creative to revive some things I haven’t worn in a while. The jacket and top I am wearing, are from Banana Republic. The jacket is a great piece to wear at night, and it’s on sale, with an additional 40% off as is the ruffle sleeveless blouse! Mixed with denim or a pair of leather pants, outfit done! We shall see what next week brings from the dark recesses of my closet.
Have a wonderful day, and thank you for reading!

Been purging all month. Decided that I am not buying anything that is not on sale. January has the best deals are out there but after this I am sticking to my closet through March 1st. Plan is to get rid of anything that has not been worn in a year. Separating out what has not been worn in 6 months. If it’s not touched by August 1st it’s goodbye. Love doing this. Your post gives me extra inspiration. Agreed not sure I feel “joy” but if it still has “value ” to me I will keep it. XO back at you. Deeb

This look is just so darned great for you. I love the tailored, frilly, sweet/ tough look and you just look so happy with the universe!! And I would love to shop your closet!! Good luck with the purging. Seems like a great time to do it as everyone is up to the same thing…I call it, ” make room for new stuff!” lol!

Love the post and the look! Even though I haven’t read the book I know that when I clean up, I feel less stressed and focused. It is also true that we need to “shop our closets” more.

Hi Chuky! Thank you for your comment, and thank you for reading the blog! Shopping your closet is really kind of fun!!! xoxo

Great post! I always get the urge to purge in January (one of my favorite hobbies, year round, actually). My kids and husband lock up their stuff because I can be brutal. I love how you shopped your closet for a more summery top, then wore it with the dark jacket and pants. I think I’ll try it for work tomorrow. Love those shoes, too!! Thanks for sharing these good ideas.
January 17, 2016 @ 8:04 pm
Hi Mary! Thank you for your comment! You sound like I did when my kids were under roof! I used to make them so mad by throwing things out while they were at school! Keep being brutal!!! I think we just have to get creative with what we have in our closets. I so love that white jeans are acceptable year round too! Thank you for reading the blog!!! xoxo

I am a neat freak too.
I’m reading the book now and I understand what you are saying but when I think that when some clothes or books or other objects brings you joy you feel it because when you touch them, very nice memories come to your mind, through the smells the texture, the images… Difficult to explain….
I’m loving the process of letting go all those papers and reorganizing my socks.
You look fantastic with this look.

Hi Sara! Oh good, you understand me! I totally get what you are trying to say. It’s just hard for me to hold a tee shirt in my hand and feel the joy! I am loving letting go of those things too! Very cathartic!!! Thank you for your sweet compliment, and thank you for commenting!!! xoxo

I have not read the book but I saw enough of it online to motivate me refold everything in my closet. (goop provided little videos with Marie Kondo’s folding instructions) It is amazing how much more room I have and how much easier it is to see everything. I did the same for my husband’s clothes and he is a little afraid to take things out of the drawers now that items are stacked like files instead of piled up on top of each other, but i think he will get the hang of it. Refolding everything did motivate me to get rid of a few items!
Cathy, love the ruffled top under the leather jacket! Shoes are perfect with the outfit!

Hi Paula! Okay…you win the prize! I could not even understand her folding technique, but you found videos on it! I am going to go and watch! Thank you for telling me about that!!! I am cracking up thinking about your husband being afraid to remove things out of his drawers!!! I would be afraid of messing it up too! I would probably just stare at my drawers being that organized. I am going to try it!!! Thank you for your sweet comment about the outfit! I appreciate you reading the post!!! xoxo
January 15, 2016 @ 2:42 am
You are so funny! The folding is super easy! You have to be a little flexible but, all in all, I did find it revolutionary. As for the rest, it’s less about what gives me joy and more about what clearly doesn’t give me joy. Does that make sense?
Meanwhile, I did create work for myself because my husband is no longer capable of putting his clothes away!
January 17, 2016 @ 7:58 pm
Hi Paula! Just getting back around to answering comments! Your comment clearly makes sense…the folding is another story! I will get it, I hope!!! Do you think our husbands are related, because he sure sounds like mine! Have a great day!

You go girl! Love the photos of you? Ok, so I will take the challenge to shopping in my closet too! Although I just spent some time in a gorgeous mall in AZ, is that cheating?
January 14, 2016 @ 7:59 pm
Why, thank you Jeila!!! Join me in the challenge! Don’t think you cheated one bit…and, if it is a REALLY good sale, that doesn’t count either!!! xx

How ironic! I’ve been shopping my closet this month too and wondered “Do I look recycled?” I’ve not read the book , but this post definitely has me intrigued. Your poise, and graceful humor are evident in your writing. I look forward to relaxing in the evenings as I reading your new entries.
January 14, 2016 @ 7:58 pm
Hi Delia! Good Girl for shopping your closet! I bet you don’t look recycled at all!!! Your comments are so sweet, and I am so appreciative that you would read my blog!!! Please keep in touch!!! xoxo

This book has so many incredulous parts to it, I could not take her seriously.
She was reading fashion magazines at 5? Bull.
How about emptying your entire purse every night when you come home and putting everything away. Crazy. So picture an emergency when you need to leave the house and everything is scattered.
Her advise to throw your entire wardrobe on the floor prior to evaluating each item. Dumb and very bad Feng Shiu. I would never disrespect my things by throwing them on the floor.
Sorry, rant over. This was one of the dumbest, most commercialized crappy books on organization I’ve ever read.
January 14, 2016 @ 3:35 pm
Well, you certainly sound incredulous. I found the book to be incredible. Marie Kondo grants each item in her household respect and gratitude, to a degree that a lot of people find odd. I found her views quirky, but compelling. And endearing. After trying her approach, I have found that it fosters peacefulness, order, and calm. The book clearly doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it was very helpful to me, as was her second book, “Spark Joy”, which I am reading now.

Hey Jennifer! I love how honest you are!!! I felt the same about emptying my purse every night…great thought, but it aint gonna happen with me! I understand how being organized can make you feel less stressed, but I just don’t think I can throw everything away. I want to keep some of those finger paintings my children did, even if they don’t want them. They don’t necessarily bring me joy, because they are packed up, but I know they are there. Your comment is well taken! Have a great day!!! xx
