WHY I WON’T WEAR JEANS WITH HOLES AT THE KNEE
Hi Everyone! Are you all settling back into real life? I can’t catch up on my sleep, but I’m so glad to not be on the eating and drinking train anymore. I know that most of you have figured out that jeans are my jam, and I wear them almost every day. When ripped jeans hit the scene of late, I was a little skeptical about wearing them, but slowly but surely, they inched their way into my closet. Now when I say ripped, I am talking a little distressed instead of full-blown rips, like this. What I won’t wear, are holes at the knees with the threads across, like this. Here is why…Once you reach a certain age (40ish), your knees start to sag or your skin gets looser, sort of like everything else on your body!!!
My knees aren’t horribly saggy and don’t look that bad in a dress, but put a pair of ripped jeans with threads across the knee and it turns into what I think looks like “vajeana” knee! My daughter coined that word after me telling her about what I thought this looked like. It looks like a vagina knee! I was with my friends Sam and Heather, trying on jeans a few weeks back. They both wanted me to try on a pair that was ripped at the knee. I told them no way was I wearing a pair like that and told them about the “vajeana” knee. They prodded me to try, and as I had them all the way on, Sam looked at my knees and said…’Oh my God, it’s happening”. I told her, but she wouldn’t believe it until she saw it. A week ago, Heather and I were in a dressing room and she put on a tighter pair ripped at the knee (with threads). We both just howled! There it was!
Ladies…wear your distressed jeans, but be careful when they are ripped at the knee. It’s better to wear them with a big hole at the knee, than with the threads across. Just a little helpful hint by me today. Have a great day! xx

Oh, that’s funny! I tried a few ripped knee styles but because I’m so short the rips usually fall well below my knees and look….weird. You look great!

I agree. I think overly distressed jeans on anyone over, say 35, is a fashion no no. I’m 52 years young. I still like to dress fashionable and wear cute clothes. However, when you get to a certain age you can dress in the latest fashions but avoid anything extreme. I too wear distressed jeans like the ones you are wearing in this picture.
I believe clothes can date you, make you look like you’re trying to look young, or can help you look ageless.
I use Pinterest and blogs such as yours to stay classy with my wardrobe.

Agree! I think the example of the Asos pair says it all – mature knees or not- they look a bit silly. Having grown up in the sixties, we would patch our holes with recycled fabric. I wish I still had that pair….

Hilarious! I’ve never been a fan of overly distressed jeans. They just don’t fit my aesthetic. At 60, even less so. Have a great day!

You are totally right! I bought one pair of ripper jeans and I thought when wearing them…..NO nog anymore!

I am with you. Moreover, I hate the caution one has to pay when pulling them on. Two words: Toe catching!

Personally, I think that jeans/pants with huge rips, tears, and gapping holes are ridiculous on anyone of any age. I’m all for a little bit of distress and destruction like you’re wearing but I draw the line on body parts showing through.

I think this depends on the person. I am over 40 and love ripped jeans. I have always worked out and don’t really notice this as an issue, or maybe it’s just not an issue yet! In my opinion, you can’t put an “age” on what’s appropriate or looks good. Body type and personal style play a major role. Feeling comfortable and confident always looks good !

I agree. I love my jeans and wear them distressed but not with big holes in them.

I am way late to this post but feel the need to acknowledge that you have ruined ripped jeans for me. I love your blog but now all I can think about when wearing distressed jeans is what my knees MAY look like…..

Oh, Ashley! I am so sorry I ruined them for you! Maybe your knees don’t look like mine. I don’t mind ripped jeans at the knee if the whole knee is ripped out. It’s just when the thread is over them that it doesn’t look so hot. I am, however, for whatever makes you feel good! xx

I always remember what one guy said in the 70’s when this first started: “so the knees wore out from all the kneeling you do on the job, streetwalker.” lol
