THE KESSLER THEATER

A few weeks ago, I learned about a project by Eventbrite called Hometown Hunt. Most of you probably already know of Eventbrite, but if you don’t, it is a technology platform for discovering events, and even managing them. Anyone can create, share or find new things to do on this website. Because of this, I was inspired to tell you about one of my favorite places in Dallas to hear live music. (I know I’m in Nashville now, but I haven’t found my favorite place here).

The Kessler Theater, or ” The Kessler” ( to those in the know), is a remodeled theater (dating back to 1942) in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas.  When I was growing up in Dallas, Oak Cliff was the area that you just didn’t go to. It has had a resurgence, and now is one of the coolest areas with great bars and restaurants. “The Kessler” was renovated and reopened as a music venue in 2009. The actual theater is small and intimate, with comfortable chairs. You are really close to the artists, especially if you purchase a small table for four. It’s not the kind of place to get drunk and make a fool of yourself, it’s a more sophisticated concert crowd who just want to hear great music. And great music you can hear! Here is the line up for upcoming concerts.

Another great feature of “The Kessler” is their bar. When you walk into the building, there is an art deco designed bar, with an art gallery space. They have a full bar and really good wine, that are served in real glasses (not plastic like most concert venues). They also have a kitchen with a great chef, who was part of the opening crew for the James Beard award winning restaurant ABC Kitchen in New York. It’s not your usual concert fare! Check out the menu here.

If you live in Dallas and have never been to The Kessler Theater, you are missing out!!! If you are planning on visiting Dallas, I highly recommend taking in a show during your stay. It will be your favorite place to hear music, I promise!!!
